Early build comments. All I can say is

"WHO PARKED THE JET IN MY HOUSE!!!???"

How the hell could two little crappy fans make so much NOISE!!! Yellow Mad

They don't cool worth a damn either. I thought I could get away with the retail HSFs but no way. Looks like I need to drop a bill on these:

Task Manager looks pretty sweet though. Mr. Green

Well, considering those chips are designed for server use, I can see why noise wasn't a consideration in the design. They expect them to be used in a server, in a climate controlled room full of other servers, not sitting right next to a user's desk.

The standard socket placement sucks for cooling options as well. They're placed in a standard location so server makers can duct air to them without having to design multiple systems. They're so close together you're hard pressed to find quiet HS's that can be adapted to that small footprint.

In similar spot as goobee here...waiting for heatsink to arrive. Laughing Tracking says it's in a post office in Chicago somewhere, maybe it'll be in my mailbox when I get home. Laughing Originally planned to reuse what I had previously, but then couldn't find the stock heatsink to the old rig....figured if I was going to put money out for a new one, may as well get a nice one. OK, I hear what you say about space so I went with the best 90mm heatsink instead, the Thermaltake Ultima-90.

http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/thulforinso7.html

Supposedly from the reviews I've seen, the Ultima-90 works as well if not better than some of the bigger 120mm towers. In any case, I've got 2 coming.

Additionally I picked up the xeon brackets and 2 35db 92mm Panaflow fans.

Watercool them. Yellow Razz Yellow Wink Yellow Laugh

Seriously, the waterblocks will fit easily, a properly sized radiator can handle the load of two processors and the GPU, it's a lot quieter and it's got serious bling. Yellow Cool

Nah, I'll pass on water cooling. My new Thermalrights should be here by Thursday. Until then, I'll keep the twin jets turned off. Yellow Mad

It was a tight fit but I got them on. The beauty with the Ultima-90 is that you can use 120mm fans too. It was really tight by the video card but I was able to squeeze the fan over a little bit.

Looks like I'm stuck with this video card for a while.

Finally started Folding with the rig.

Getting 10 minutes per frame, not that much better than my Opteron 885's. I guess there's a point of diminishing returns after a certain performance level.

Yeah, but overall, you're doing twice as many for about the same amount of electricity. Yellow Cool

I've got a cable so I can get the third machine running in the livingroom. This is the machine that will eventually go to my brother. I didn't want to spend another $99 on a wireless card for it, especially since my wireless router is proving to be a POS (frequent connection drops). At least it'll be crunching until I drop it off. Supposedly, the Linux client is more efficient than Windoze. Maybe one day I'll try putting it on and giving it a go.
