AMD finally released their quad-cores. Well, at least the released them to the reviewers. _________________ Socially distancing since 1970. |

I wonder how accurate those price points are? The 2-way Opty 2350's at $389 is not bad at all. You could pick up a set for less than $800.
Intel is planning a price drop to coincide with Barcelona's launch. I was planning on maybe a duallie Xeon 5345 or 5355 but AMD's launch pricing makes things very interesting.
That is if we ever get to put our grubby hands on them. Until then, it's still vaporware. _________________

Some reading for the probable price points from a guy who actually sells quit a few processors to forum members: http://forums.2cpu.com/showthread.php?t=85637
If I was going to buy an Intel Quad I'd get a couple 5320's for ~$290ea and do the G30 pad insulator mod (Dogbert's review: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16819117115 ) on them to make them into 5345's.
I'm waiting until after I get moved and resettled to get a firm handle on what my budget will be. That keeps me out of the market until at least late Jan '08. By that time Intel will already be on their 45nm process and AMD won't be far from it...hopefully. _________________ Socially distancing since 1970. |

I found an article on how to do the mod here:

Definitely something to consider.
Instead of tape, I can just use a little finger nail enamel on the pad. No chance of it coming off or moving. _________________

Yup, by the time I'm ready to buy they ought to have the speeds up at that price point. _________________ Socially distancing since 1970. |

Whether Xeon or Barcelona, I'll need the cpus, new mobo and new ram. From the reviews I've seen thus far, Barcelona is good but doesn't beat Xeon in all areas. For me, since there's no clear cut winner, I think I'll be going for the best deal. _________________
