Xeon e5-2690. Any real gain over my i7-970?

In terms of architecture, Sandy Bridge is better technology and faster than Gulftown. i7-970 is 6 cores, 12 threads. e5-2690 is 8 cores, 16 threads.

Memory bandwidth, i7-970 is triple channel while e5-2690 is dual channel.

It will cost a good chunk of change to upgrade to Xeon, I will need new mobo, cpu, and HSF. I may also have to buy new ram if I don't carry over my existing ram. Currently I have 6 x 4gbs DDR1600 (24gbs total). In a LGA2011 board, I will only be able to use 4 x 4gbs (16gbs total) which is most likely not enough for 16 threads.

What do you think, any real gain for OGR?

Sandy Bridge is effectively a better architecture. Let's compute how much better it is compare to gulftown.
I have two machines running the same OS (Linux 64 bits) and the same OGR client (dnetc v2.9110-519-CFR-11041615).

The first one is Core I7 2600K @3.4GHz (Sandy Bridge) running 8 threads and giving me 60 Mnodes/s per thread --> 480 Mnodes/s for the entire machine.
The second one is core I7 980 @3.33 GHz (Gulftown) running 12 threads and giving me 41 Mnodes/s per thread --> 492 Mnodes/s for the entire machine.

I can estimate your actual core I7 970 around 39 Mnodes/s per thread --> 473 Mnodes/s for the entire machine

In the same conditions your future Xeon e5-2690 @2.9GHz (Sandy Bridge) running 16 threads should give you 60*2.9/3.4=51 Mnodes/s per thread --> 819 MNodes/s for the entire machine.

It's 73% more ! Mr. Green

Not bad at all !!! Yellow Twisted
