I'm still planning on having two machines. I'm just planning on them both being dual, quad-cores. If I can have 16 cores crunching in 2 machines where as it used to take me 4 machines I'll be very happy.
Yeah, the single processor machines are cheaper upfront, but I'm still convinced that as long as you're not getting the absolute top of the line processors you can do well with the dual processor machines from a heat/efficiency standpoint.
Think about it, where do you lose at least 15% of your electricity to heat right off the top? The PSU, and that's if you get an ultra efficient one. Most of them lose 20-25%. With single processor machines you need twice as many systems, i.e. PSU's to equal the same crunching output.
Then figure in the additional Video chip, MB, RAM and HD and you're sucking a lot more electricity and putting out more heat than a single efficient dual processor machine.
Now it's just a matter of sitting back and seeing how the prices and performance numbers shake out between now and when I'll be paying for my own electricity again. I'm hoping AMD can make a big comeback, but I'm betting Intel will undercut their prices again. Either way, we'll win as long as AMD can hold on and keep putting pressure on Inhel. _________________ Socially distancing since 1970. |

I've been reading that Intel might be trying to lay a smack down on AMD and price cut them out of business. Seems pretty close to reality. Intel has a first generation quad core out in both the server and consumer markets and a second generation cpu right around the corner as well.
Barcelona needs to impress and soon. But can they price them attractively enough to make a profit and pull customers away from Intel? Big questions ahead for AMD. _________________

I've decided something different....playing the "go to gym and get in shape" game, and am using the idea of wanting a new pc as motivation. Nothing till I reach goal....or I may have to do milestones and get one part at each milestone or something. _________________ I知 not bad....I知 just drawn that way! |

Running an instance of F@H for Team-Goobee.org would rank as a good cause. _________________
